The Dons captain is out of contract at the end of the season and reports have indicated the 27-year-old could be on his way to Glasgow.

Shinnie is able to sign a pre-contract deal immediately with his Pittodrie future up in the air.

Rangers take on Aberdeen in a Scottish Cup quarter-final replay at Ibrox tonight (7.45pm) after drawing 0-0 last week with Derek McInnes’ side having held Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic to a draw at Parkhead at the weekend.

And that will allow Gerrard another look at Shinnie with it the sixth time the two teams will meet this season.

Shinnie has been an ever-present for Aberdeen this season, producing four goals and four assists in 39 appearances across all competitions.

Yet Gerrard – who has already welcomed a huge influx of new signings since being appointed in the summer – shied away from discussing any potential interest in the Scotland international.

He said: “It’s all speculation. It’s part of being the Rangers manager.

“Every time I get my media briefing or clips, we are linked with five or six different players.

“I won’t be getting involved in a comment on Graeme or any other player for that matter.

“Especially during the season, when the window is shut.

“I don’t think it’s the right time to be talking about ins and outs.”

Aberdeen boss McInnes, however, is keen for Shinnie to sign a new contract with his current club.

He told the Evening Express back in January: “I will speak to Graeme when we are out here in Dubai and hopefully we can get the answer we all want. But again I totally respect all my players who are out of contract in the summer.

“They are quite right to look at all the options. However, Shinnie is one that it is vitally important we try to keep.”

McInnes added last month: “Graeme has a lot to consider and what is clear is his pride at being Aberdeen captain and he has a connection with the fans.

“He has a lot to consider and hopefully he will continue to be an Aberdeen player.”

Gerrard has secured two pre-contract deals already with Kilmarnock winger Jordan Jones moving to the Glasgow giants in the summer.

Dundee midfielder Glen Kamara, meanwhile, agreed to make his move to Rangers six months early in January after the two clubs agreed a fee of compensation to fast-track the deal.
