Mikkelsen plays Duncan in the new Netflix thriller, which is being lapped up by viewers despite widely negative reviews. And it seems that the scene was particularly “brutal” to make for the star, who was on the other end of proceedings for that similar notorious scene with Daniel Craig in Casino Royale.

“That was pretty brutal, to be honest,” he told Syfy.com.

“We had two or three long, long days in that dungeon there. It was freezing cold, of course, which is always the case.

“Even though they had something hidden to take the weight off my shoulders, it was brutally tough to make it look right. It was quite brutal.

“It took me quite a few weeks to recover from that.”

There are no regrets, though. “It looks good. It was worth it,” he added.

Polar has a lowly 20% score on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating that it has been generally panned across the board.

The critics’ consensus reads: “An action thriller starring Mads Mikkelsen as the world’s most dangerous assassin should be terrifically entertaining, but Polar proves it’s possible to ruin anything if you try.”

In a one-star review, The Guardian said: “There are occasionally clever moments in Polar… but they are drowned in a sea of blood and guts as [Jonas] Åkerlund [director] stuffs his film with wall-to-wall violence.”

Variety wrote: “This abhorrent actioner is vulgar auteurism at its most depraved.”

And Los Angeles Times raged: “Too bad the only thrill you get from all the bloodletting is that you know each cartoony death brings you that much closer to the end credits.”

Joining Mikkelsen in the cast are Vanessa Hudgens, Katheryn Winnick and Matt Lucas.

Polar is streaming now on Netflix.
