The 53rd edition of the Super Bowl is set to be another classic showdown as the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams go for glory.

Fans around the world will be watching eagerly as the events unfold at the Atlanta Falcons’ Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The Pats arrive as favourites, with this being their third Super Bowl appearance in a row, while the Rams are featuring in the NFL season finale for the first time since 2002.

The iconic Vince Lombardi Trophy will be presented to the winning team but the players will also be vying for the prestigious MVP award.

MVP Super Bowl 2019 – who will win?

Express Sport looks at the leading contenders who could scoop up the MVP award tonight.

Tom Brady – Quarterback, New England Patriots

Brady already has five Super Bowl rings to his name, a joint record, but he will be in a league of his own if he can claim a sixth by overcoming the Rams in Atlanta.

The Pats star has completed 375 of 570 passes this season and passed for a total of 4355 yards, putting him seventh in the overall NFL standings.

He has also thrown for 29 touchdowns for the New England side.

Sony Michel – Running back, New England Patriots

The rookie is guaranteed to see plenty of the ball tonight.

A big run or two, coupled with a touchdown or two, and a game-changing play could launch him right into MVP contention.

Rob Gronkowski – Tight end, New England Patriots

Gronkowski’s future is up in the air with several reports suggesting this could be his final appearance in a Patriots kit.

His campaign has been disrupted by injuries and New England coach Bill Belichick has been reluctant to overuse the star.

But with this being the season finale, Pats may call on ‘Gronk’ to deliver some big plays for them.

Jared Goff – Quarterback, LA Rams

Goff has been in brilliant form for the Rams this season but he faces a tough challenge against the Patriots.

He has completed 364 of his 561 and thrown for a combined 4688, over 300 more than Brady.

Goff has also passed for more touchdowns than his Patriots counterpart but it could all come down to victory tonight.

If the Rams star can guide his team to Super Bowl glory he will among the leading candidates for MVP.

Todd Gurley – Running back, LA Rams

Gurley tops the charts this season for touchdowns scored and is third for rushing yards.

He was quiet in the Rams’ play-off clash against New Orlean Saints but many fans expect him to shine in the Super Bowl.

If Gurley delivers a big performance tonight his name will well and truly be in the hat for MVP.

Aaron Donald – Defensive tackle, LA Rams

Donald has already been named the 2018 AP Defensive Player of the Year, after also winning the award last season too.

The four-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowl selection had a league-high 20.5 sacks, 59 tackles, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a pass defence in 16 starts this season.
