However, all signs point to the 46-year-old being given the keys to Old Trafford at the end of the season, having steered the club to 12 wins from their first 15 matches.
Reports have claimed that Manchester United will do battle with PSG for Borussia Dortmund hotshot Sancho when the transfer window reopens.
The England international has caught the eye with his breathtaking performances for the Bundesliga outfit.
However, amid United’s pursuit of a right-winger, they could land two players easier instead.
PSG will no doubt be difficult foes in the transfer market given the embarassment of riches they have at their disposal.
And, if their Champions League dream fails again this year, Thomas Tuchel will need a marquee name to get fans onside.
Dortmund could then demand mega-millions to let their star asset go and United may be able to swerve that by looking to the past instead.
If they want a right winger, then Wilfried Zaha should be an option.
The Ivory Coast international continues to go from strength to strength at Crystal Palace and played under Solskjaer at Cardiff.
The 46-year-old recently lauded the former United winger, saying: “He was a great lad, he worked hard to improve and it was maybe too early for him when he came to United.
“It is great to see him playing well now.”
And United’s insistence on a buy-back clause means he would be an easier coup than Sancho.
So too would Lyon’s Memphis Depay.
The Netherlands international has flourished ever since turning his back on United in January 2017.
The forward has forged a name for himself in France and Robert Pires recently admitted he could be ready for a Premier League return.
“It didn’t work out for him at Manchester United and Depay is a very proud player,” he said.
“He perhaps feels he wasn’t given a chance to perform and earn the right to stay longer considering he was so young and showed glimpses of undoubted potential.
“Depay might want to return to Manchester United or he might be motivated to prove them wrong by performing for one of their rivals in the Premier League.
“It will be interesting to see what happens this summer.”
Mourinho insisted on a buy-back clause when Depay left the club.
And that means United would be able to negotiate with him – like Zaha – easier than any PSG battle for Sancho.
