Ronaldo put in a performance to remember on Tuesday night, as he completely turned Juventus’ Champions League tie on its head at the Allianz Stadium.
Atletico led 2-0 from the first leg, thanks to goals from Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin.
But the second chapter in the tie was a completely different story, as Ronaldo dominated the usually-impenetrable Atletico defence with a stunning hat-trick.
The forward hammered in an 86th-minute penalty after netting two headers earlier in the game, stunning the visitors and putting Juve into the quarter finals.
Fans immediately started to make comparisons between Ronaldo and Messi, who have been considered to be the best two players of the current generation and also of all time.
Last night, just 24 hours after the Juve forward’s heroics, Barcelona squared off with Lyon in an attempt to progress through to the last eight of the Champions League.
They ran out 5-1 winners, becoming the only Spanish team remaining, as Messi scored a double.
He also chipped in with two assists, setting up Gerard Pique and Ousmane Dembele for their late goals.
After the game, all the questions were about his fiercest rival, as the Barcelona legend admitted that Ronaldo’s performance impressed him.
“The thing about Cristiano and Juventus yesterday was impressive,” he said.
“It was a big surprise, Juventus went over Atletico, I hoped they [Atletico] would have more strength.
“Juventus has a lot of potential and Cristiano had a magical night with his three goals.”
Ronaldo, who joined The Old Lady last summer from Real Madrid in an £88million move, suggested that his side can go all the way in Europe for the first time since 2003.
“This was why Juventus brought me here, to help do things that they have never done before,” he said.
“It was always going to be a special night and it was – not only for the goals but for the team.
“This is the mentality you need to win in the Champions League.
“We enjoyed a magical night. Atletico were a difficult team but we were strong too.
“We will see what will happen.”
