Leeds United transfer news: Daniel James is a wanted man
And the Whites face a tricky task negotiating with Swansea.
Leeds signed Kiko Casilla from Real Madrid earlier this month.
And with just hours of the transfer window remaining, the West Yorkshire club are throwing everything they can at landing James.
James, 21, came up through the Swansea youth academy but could leave the side for Elland Road today.
The transfer deadline closes at 11pm and here’s everything you need to know about the deal so far…
Daniel James to Leeds United
Leeds want James
That may be the obvious statement – but this is more than simply a deadline-day rumour.
Leeds United transfer news: Daniel James can leave for £10m
Leeds United transfer news: Daniel James has handed in a transfer request
Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa wants James in his squad by 11pm.
The Whites are gunning for the Premier League and Express Sport understands talks between the two clubs are ongoing.
Leeds signing James would boost their attacking prowess and make the Championship table-toppers even stronger.
Leeds United transfer news: Daniel James (right) is having a medical
James having Leeds medical
Daniel James is having his medical at Leeds United.
And that means a deal between Leeds and Swansea is now surely in place.
The YEP’s Phil Hay tweeted just before 3pm: “Daniel James now having a medical with Leeds United. Deal with Swansea is in place.”
it is not yet known what fee Leeds have agreed to pay, or if the move will be on loan.
Leeds had been hoping to sign James for around £5m today.
But Swansea will not budge on their valuation.
As the BBC’s Dafydd Pritchard reports, Swansea are holding out for £10m for their attacking star.
However, Leeds are only winning to go as high as £6m, paid in three instalments.
So can Leeds afford it? Well, they may need to loan James with a view to a permanent move.
How much could James cost?
A £2m loan fee with a permanent transfer worth over £10m could be struck.
But Leeds would need to secure promotion for that deal to go ahead.
The Whites are desperate for a return to the Premier League.
And if James can secure them top-flight status once again then this is an investment well worth making.
Leeds United transfer news: Daniel James may arrive on loan
Bielsa on James
Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa discussed his interest in James today.
“So far I don’t have any news about the transfer,” he said.
“I know that both clubs are negotiating.
“I agreed with the fact that he could come as Saiz is not in the club anymore and Pablo plays at number 10.”
What happens now?
Express Sport understands talks between the two clubs are ongoing.
And Leeds have been boosted with the revelation James has asked to leave Swansea.
The Swans don’t want to keep a player on their books who has requested an exit.
So Leeds’ negotiating stance may change in the coming hours.
Leeds United transfer news: Marcelo Bielsa has named his XI to face Norwich
Will James play on Saturday?
Leeds plan Norwich in a crunch clash at Elland Road on Saturday.
But if James were to sign for the club he may not get a game.
Bielsa named his starting XI for the top-of-the-table clash.
It reads: Casilla, Ayling, Jansson, Cooper, Alioski, Forshaw, Harrison, Klich, Roberts, Hernandez, Roofe.
Can Swansea reinvest the cash?
Most likely no. Time is running out and the Swans would probably be held to ransom if they went after another player with their £2m loan fee in hand.
Swansea have had a miserable window to date.
Wilfried Bony is heading to Qatar, while West Brom want Jefferson Montero.
Fenerbahce and Lille are interested in Leroy Fer.
And John Harrison has expressed his frustrations at the goings on in south Wales.
“Feel for every Swansea city fan.. how can you possibly move forward when you keep selling and not investing,” he tweeted.
