Ivanka Trump, 37, wore a chic black and red look to the important event last night. The First Daughter chose an entire look by British designer Alexander McQueen – the skirt, jacket and belt were all from the brand and came to a total cost of $3613 (£2,792). Her long blonde locks were curled, with one side tucked behind her ear. Picking up the red stripe on the side of her skirt, Ivanka wore a bold red lipstick.

She teamed this with heavy mascara and flawless skin.

A pair of drop pearl earrings completed the look.

Ivanka was joined at the State of the Union Address by her husband, Jared Kushner, half-sister Tiffany Trump and step-mother Melania Trump.

Melania also chose a British brand, wearing a simple look from Burberry.

The two most important women in Donald’s life weren’t the only ones catching attention for their outfits last night.

A host of women from both the Republican and Democrat parties wore white – but why?

They were asked to wear the colour to honour the legacy of women’s suffrage in the US. The sartorial choice was designed to send a clear message to the world about the number of elected women in US democracy.

The tradition of wearing white to honour women’s suffrage dates back to almost a century ago to the women’s suffrage movement in the US. But it was also chosen for tonight’s address for aesthetic reasons due to it standing out on camera.

The chair of the working group that came up with the idea, Republican Lois Frankel, told CNN: “Wearing suffragette white is a respectful message of solidarity with women across the country, and a declaration that we will not go back on our hard-earned rights.”

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, was also seen wearing white during the speech.

Ivanka Trump: Five facts about Donald Trump’s daughter

Real name

Ivanka is not, in fact, her real name. She actually shares her mother’s name Ivana.

Explaining why she is known as Ivanka in a 2010 tweet, she said: “In Czech, Ivanka is the baby name for Ivana, like Bobby is to Robert.”

TV appearances

Ivanka was well known to the American public before her father became President thanks to appearances on TV.

She made short cameos on Project Runway and Gossip Girl, as well as becoming a primary boardroom member on The Apprentice with Donald.

Wedding

Ivanka married Jared Kushner on 25 October 2009 at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, after a three month engagement.

Barron Trump served as ring bearer, as Ivanka wore a custom Vera Wang gown accessorised with diamonds from her fine jewellery collection.

Religion

Ivanka was raised as a Presbyterian Christian, but converted to Judaism to allow her to marry Jared Kushner.

Ivanka studied with Elie Weinstock from the Modern Orthodox Ramaz School, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City.

She now keeps kosher and observes the Jewish Sabbath. Ivanka said in the February 2015 edition of Vogue: “We’re pretty observant… It’s been such a great life decision for me… I really find that with Judaism, it creates an amazing blueprint for family connectivity.

“From Friday to Saturday we don’t do anything but hang out with one another. We don’t make phone calls.”

Career

Ivanka ran a fashion line for 11 years, only recently closing it down. She also had a fine jewellery store which closed in March 2017.

Ivanka now focuses on her role as an advisor to the President, Donald Trump.
