That is the opinion of former Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo, who is hoping Schumacher can follow in his father Michael’s footsteps.

Schumacher is widely regarded as one of the world’s top racing prospects and he cemented that by winning the F3 title last year.

In 2019, the German will drive for Prema Racing in F2 as he seeks to continue his so-far rapid development.

Last month it was announced that Schumacher had signed a deal with the Ferrari Driver Academy, which could pave the way for him to compete for them in F1 in future.

Di Montezemolo, though, has called on Ferrari not to put too much pressure on Schumacher at the start of his fledgling career.

Mick Schumacher? I love him,” Di Montezemolo told Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I’ve known him since he was in the crib, when Michael protected him from mosquitoes.

“He is a serious, intelligent boy who must be allowed to grow up.

“Like father like son? It’s still early but I hope so.”

Schumacher has received plenty of attention due to the fact his father is the most successful F1 driver of all time.

Michael Schumacher won seven World Drivers’ Championships during stints with Benetton and Ferrari.

Schumacher admits his relationship with the racing legend means he faces increased expectations.

“I am happy to be the son of the greatest F1 racer of all time, I admire him for that,” Schumacher said.

“And even if sometimes it can be a bit difficult, it is what it is.

“There are good sides to it and there are bad sides.”

Ferrari’s decision to get Schumacher on board comes after Mercedes and Red Bull showed interest in securing his services.
