Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Henderson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Mane, Salah, Origi

  • Brazilian duo Roberto Firmino and Richarlison start on the bench
  • Theo Waclott booked after seven minutes
  • Jordan Pickford good save to deny Mohamed Salah

EVERTON 0-0 LIVERPOOL

89: So tense! Andre Gomes breaks forward and lays the ball off to Cenk Tosun, who Joel Matip is there to block. Do Liverpool have one more attack up their sleeves?

87: Oooooooooh big decision! Lucas Digne is felled JUST outside the penalty area.

This will either be Gylfi Sigurdsson or Lucas Digne… awful! Digne takes and punts it out of play on the other side of the pitch.

85: Van Dijk with a huge tackle! Bernard plucks a long ball out the sky and shifts the ball to his right. He pulls the trigger but the big man arrives to block.

Wanna on for Sadio Mane.

83: Adam Lallana is preparing to come on. The boyhood Everton fan back to haunt the Toffees? He’s needed – Liverpool are progressively getting worse now. Lost any cohesion they had upfront.

80: Fabinho is aggravated when Andre Gomes knocks the ball past him. He kicks out and receives a booking.

We’re into the final 10 minutes at Goodison Park. Can either side find a winner? Should it remain goalless – Manchester City will lead the Premier League by a point.

79: He’s scuffed it. Richarlison plays a quick free-kick in to Cenk Tosun, who swipes and connects with very little indeed. The Liverpool players look to the linesman – he was onside!

77: Close! Everton are a whisker away from breaking the deadlock as a reverse pass sees Richarlison away down the right. He fizzes a cross through the six-yard box that Bernard desperately reaches stretches for. Misses by a few inches and Liverpool clear.

Booked! Robertson takes the bait by clattering Richarlison to the ground. Andre Gomes replaces Morgan Schneiderlin for the closing stages. Cenk Tosun on for DCL.

75: Neither side wants to keep the ball now. There’s just frantic breaking forward all over the place.

74: Liverpool counter at speed! Fabinho wins the ball back from Bernard and arrows it forward to Mohamed Salah. He shifts the ball onto this left peg but a tame cross/shot is straight at Pickford.

71: Chance! Fabinho takes an absolute eternity to strike and after Virgil van Dijk nodded the ball back across goal. He needs to attack the ball but his hesitation allowed Lucas Digne to hack it away.

70: Final 20 minutes here at Goodison Park. Everton are gradually improving and growing with confidence – but Liverpool have the latest chance on the break.

Firmino clips a dangerous ball towards the back post but it’s just too high for Mane to divert at goal.

68: Alisson slips! That could have been the Steven Gerrard story – Part 2. The goalkeeper hits the deck when clearing the ball but Richarlison can’t capitalise and gifts the ball back to Liverpool.

65: Corner to Everton. Lucas Digne’s inswinger is met by Kurt Zouma, who balloons it over the crossbar.

Jurgen Klopp makes a double change. James Milner and Roberto Firmino replace Georginio Wijnaldum and Divock Origi.

63: Everton make the first change as Richarlison comes on for Theo Walcott. Looks fired up and itching to go.

Roberto Firmino was supposed to come on at the same time but couldn’t seem to find his shirt! Jurgen Klopp was less than impressed.

60: WHAT A CHALLENGE! Joel Matip is allowed to travel 30 yards forward before his through ball takes a deflection off Kurt Zouma and falls for Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian goes to pull the trigger but there’s Michael Keane with a terrific sliding tackle.

Think that’s now three heavy touches from Salah that have allowed Everton players to recover.

58: I suspect Divock Origi knows his time is nearly up. He ignores options and looks to squeeze a shot into the near post. Wide.

Everton fans getting very agitated with some of Jordan Pickford’s risky kicking – and judging by Kurt Zouma’s reaction he shares their fury.

56: Straight from that corner – Liverpool go close. Alisson pings it out to Sadio Mane, who draws a foul from Gueye about 30 yards from goal.

Trent is standing over it… saved! Good, low effort from the youngster. Pickford gathers.

54: Virgil van Dijk is livid with Fabinho, who lazily passes straight to Theo Walcott. The winger hesitates before Gylfi Sigurdsson takes it off him and sprays it wide to Coleman. Corner.

Save! Alisson into action at last as he springs to save Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header.

51: Fabinho and Coleman have the briefest of arguments over by the corner flag. The Brazilian wasn’t happy with the forceful tackle.

48: Still a shocking lack of composure from Everton. Idrissa Gueye wins the ball in midfield but simply pumps it all the way back to Alisson.

In other news, Roberto Firmino looks relaxed on the sidelines. In fact, he’s just been spotted agreeing to hold someone’s baby for a photo…

EVERTON 0-0 LIVERPOOL

45: Jordan Pickford attempted the most passes of any Everton player in the first half with 27. The Toffees will need to up their game if they want to dent Liverpool’s title hopes.

No changes for either side at the break. I did spot Roberto Firmino and James Milner warming up. Perhaps 15 minutes and then Jurgen Klopp will throw them into the mix.

Twitter round-up

Phil: Everton will be happy so far but Liverpool showing the flashes of attacking quality. Everton not causing Liverpool any problems by simply launching towards DCL, who is getting no joy against VVD.

Richard: Dreadful miss by Mohamed Salah, not a great save. Titles are won and lost on things like that. Salah is off the pace today.

Dennis: Can’t see Everton winning this match. They have shown Liverpool too much respect. It’s all one-way traffic.

DCL vs VVD – sounds like a battle between two delivery companies.

EVERTON 0-0 LIVERPOOL

HT: Yet to catch fire. Liverpool have been the dominant side with Everton limited to a few, sporadic forays forward. Mohamed Salah had the best chance of the half but a solid save from Jordan Pickford denied him. It’s goalless at Goodison Park.

45: Dominic Calvert-Lewin is on a hiding to nothing. Jordan Pickford keeps booming long balls his way but Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip are winning all the battles.

One minute added time.

43: Big interception! Andrew Robertson sends a signature cross over to the unmarked Trent Alexander-Arnold at the far post. The full-back is ready to pull the trigger until Lucas Digne somehow nicks it away.

40: Atmosphere flattening a touch as we approach the break. Nothing much for either side to get excited about.

38: Everyone watching knew what would happen there! Theo Walcott peels his marker and beats the offside trap. Instead of running it forward or cutting it back into the penalty area – he fires, slips and sends the ball into the stands. Dreadful effort and lack of composure.

36: Rock ‘n roll royalty Liam Gallagher is tuning in this afternoon. The avid Manchester City supporter wants Marco Silva’s side to do City a favour. “C’mon Everton,” he tweeted.

33: Not that impressed with Everton’s forward players so far. Young Dominic Calvert-Lewin is standing up and being counted – but Bernard and Walcott have been timid.

Still no shots on or off target from the Toffees.

30: Theo Walcott is being a bit conservative. He hasn’t really tried to beat Andrew Robertson down the right – he instead crosses first time which is exactly what Van Dijk wants.

29: How’s he missed! Last season you would be put your mortgage on Mohamed Salah scoring a one-on-one.

The Egyptian is played clean through down the right channel with Lucas Digne out of position and Michael Keane playing him onside.

He drives into the penalty area and sees his left-footed effort palmed away by Joran Pickford. Massive chance for Jurgen Klopp’s side to take the lead.

28: Beautiful play from Everton down the left channel with Calvert-Lewin and Bernard exchanging a quick one-two. The Brazilian’s first-time cross is cleared by Robertson.

Everton deploying the long throw-in today. The latest, sent in by Lucas Digne, is hoofed clear by VVD.

25: Everton hearts in mouths as Michael Keane attempt a header back to Jordan Pickford. Sadio Mane reads it a mile of and nearly intercepts. The Toffees stopper just about gets there.

22: This game is rattling along. Liverpool have looked dangerous over the last ten minutes with plenty of nearly moments. Everton have dropped a bit deeper and aren’t retaining possession too well.

19: There’s an air of anxiety whenever Liverpool win a set-piece. Quite understandable given they have the best set-piece record in the Premier League. Everton have the worst…

A corner is cleared out to Fabinho who curls a ball over the top that bounces out of play.

16: Shot! Mohamed Salah makes himself a few yards before arrowing one at goal. Jordan Pickford does well to hold.

15: What a pass from the calmest head on the field – Jordan Henderson. He finds Salah with a diagonal ball that slices Everton open. Salah brings it down but Seamus Coleman arrives to clear behind.

12: Liverpool respond. Jordan Henderson floats a cross over to Divock Origi, who prods it back into the path of Georginio Wijnaldum but Jordan Pickford is out quickly to collet.

9: Everton go close again! Calvert-Lewin’s delivery from the left bounces kindly for Sigurdsson inside the penalty area. He crosses to Walcott but Van Dijk arrives to make the clearance.

6: Close! Bernard digs a cross into the penalty area where Theo Walcott makes a real mess of his first touch. Divock Origi pinches the ball and looks to break until Walcott hacks him down. Booked!

5: The fast and furious play continues with Bernard taking on Trent Alexander-Arnold down the left channel. The Liverpool full-back wins the first of many battles.

3: If this atmosphere can’t inspire the Everton players then nothing will. Not the higher quality start though – neither side is capable of keeping the ball for more than a few passes.

EVERTON 0-0 LIVERPOOL

1: Y’all ready for this? Things are about to get crazy – I’m certain of it.

Here they come!

16:13: Just a couple of minutes until the players emerge from the tunnel to a ferocious Goodison Park. The fans are right up for this as rain continues to pour down.

Sliding surface, aggressive atmosphere, everything at stake… could be a few cards today.

Jonathan: Why are people questioning Jurgen Klopp’s selection before the game has even kicked off?! Watch the game and then make a judgement.

Andy: If Liverpool win today, will have 72 points… that would be double of Everton’s tally of 36 points. Just 29 games in… that would be something!

Ally: Wondering if swapping in Bernard for Richarlison is really the best idea, despite the latter’s poor form. Trent A-A was imperious going forward in Liverpool’s previous game and not sure how much protection Bernard is going to give down the left.

Thats not how Twitter works, Jonathan! Outrage followed by… outrage!

Team News

16:05: Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino is deemed fit enough for a place on the bench in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

The Brazil international missed the midweek win over Watford with an ankle injury but is named as one of the substitutes as manager Jurgen Klopp makes one change, replacing James Milner with Jordan Henderson in midfield.

Everton boss Marco Silva makes two changes, bringing back Kurt Zouma after suspension to replace Phil Jagielka and preferring Bernard instead of joint league top scorer Richarlison.
