Musician and actor Johnny Flynn has signed up for the gig: the 35-year-old will be familiar for his lead role as Dylan Witter in Lovesick, which started out on Channel 4 before finding a huge audience on Netflix. He has also appeared in the TV editions of Les Miserables and Vanity Fair; and may also be recognisable from Cineworld’s in-house ads.

Flynn is also a music artist who has released multiple studio albums, and he composed the title song for the TV series Detectorists.

The script for Stardust comes from Christopher Bell, and will be directed by Gabriel Range.

Jena Malone is signed up to play Angie Bowie; the idol’s first wife, who famously appeared on Celebrity Big Brother at the time of his death.

GLOW star Marc Maron is also on board; playing the publicist for Bowie’s record company.

However the film has seemingly been criticised already by Bowie’s son Duncan Jones, who said it does not have official music rights – or the family’s blessing.

“Pretty certain nobody has been granted music rights for ANY biopic… I would know,” he tweeted.

“Im not saying this movie is not happening. I honestly wouldn’t know.

“I’m saying that as it stands, this movie won’t have any of Dad’s music in it and I can’t imagine that changing.

“If you want to see a biopic without his music or the families blessing, that’s up to the audience.”

Stardust follows a slew of music biopics; including Queen tale Bohemian Rhapsody, which has become a box office monster and is up for Best Picture at the Oscars.

Rocket Man, which will portray Elton John, is out in May; and it’s also been confirmed that Celine Dion will have her story told in The Power of Love.

Stardust filming begins in June. It does not currently have a release date.
