The new record comes less than a year after her last studio effort, Sweetener, which became a global sensation last summer. Now, after the transatlantic success of its enormous title track, the new record – thank u, next (lower case intentional) – has landed on streaming services. And safe to say, it’s already an early contender for the most buzzworthy music release of the year.

The album’s name has been trending on Twitter since its release, as have the song titles Ghostin and NASA.

Unsurprisingly the album is flying to the top of the iTunes album charts worldwide, including the UK and US.

Its tracks also dominate Spotify’s New Music Friday playlists, and data for its first day on release on the streaming service will be available tomorrow.

With the song 7 rings breaking records just two weeks ago, expect those numbers to be huge.

The lyrics to Ghostin in particular have left fans stunned.

It’s been suggested that the track is about her relationship with Pete Davidson following the death of Mac Miller.

The star had said on social media last month: “[it’s about] feeling badly for the person you’re with bc [because] you love somebody else. feeling badly bc he can tell he can’t compare…. and how i should be ghosting him.”

In the song, she sings: “I know you hear me when I cry, I try to hold it in the night, when you’re sleeping next to me. But its your arms that I need this time.

“Look at the cards that we’ve been dealt, if you were anybody else, probably wouldn’t last a day.

“Every tear’s a rain parade from hell, baby you do it so well.”

In My Head is also strongly resonating, although discussion continues as to who it’s specifically about.

“My imagination’s too creative, they see demon, I see angel, angel, angel without a halo, wingless angel,” the superstar says.

“Falling, falling, but I never thought you’d leave me, falling, falling, needed something to believe in, oh, I thought you were the one.”

Fake Smile also has a heartbreaking edge to it, as the star opens up about fame.

“I read the things the write about me,” she confesses. “Hear what they saying on the TV, it’s crazy.

“It’s getting hard for them to shock me, but every now and then it’s shocking, don’t blame me.

“I know it’s the life that I chose, but baby I’m grateful I want you to know, I’m happy for the love and all the above, if I’m being honest I done been through way too much.”

thank u, next is almost certain to be number one in the UK next week, ahead of Grande’s international tour and big slot at Coachella.

The tracklisting is as follows:

  1. imagine
  2. needy
  3. NASA
  4. bloodline
  5. fake smile
  6. bad idea
  7. make up
  8. ghostin

The latter song has even had a new video release, which you can watch below.

Grande has also hit back at the Grammys on Twitter after they claimed she pulled out of performing.

When a report quoted bosses as saying she felt it was “too late to pull something together”, Grande tweeted back: “i’ve kept my mouth shut but now you’re lying about me. i can pull together a performance over night and you know that, Ken. it was when my creativity & self expression was stifled by you, that i decided not to attend. i hope the show is exactly what you want it to be and more.

“i offered 3 different songs. it’s about collaboration. it’s about feeling supported. it’s about art and honesty. not politics. not doing favors or playing games. it’s just a game y’all.. and i’m sorry but that’s not what music is to me.

“hope that helps everyone understand my decision. i am still grateful for the acknowledgement this year.”
